The standard to which Robby holds himself in the ER is highâsometimes too high. One of his greatest attributes as a boss and lead doctor is his humanity, which often shows up when he pulls residents aside to compliment their work and when he struggles to contain his emotions. Still processing the loss of his mentor, Dr. Adamson, who died of complications from COVID-19, Robby fails to resuscitate his step-sonâs girlfriend in the penultimate episode, which leads to a total breakdown in the midst of Pitt Fest chaos.
When the smoke clears, Robby looks at this temporary abdication of duty as a choke job. But on the hospital roof, Abbott (Shawn Hatosy) gives him some perspective. âSo, what? That is what happens when youâre in a war and nothing makes sense,â he says, before preaching: âYou rocked that shit down there tonight.â Are his words enough to help Robby weather another year in the ER? The wreckage is still tender. The best case-scenario: Wyleâs scruffy day-shift leader will listen to Dana, give himself some grace, get the therapy he needs, and keep PTMC humming as best it can.
Has Dana left PTMC for good?

âSee you Monday,â Robby tells Dana (Katherine LaNasa) as they finish their shift and leave the hospital. She pauses for a beat, then exits quietly. The silence is deafening.
After 33 years spent in the ER, Dana has seen and withstood just about everything, but getting clocked in the face by someone twice her sizeâsomeone whom she was trying to help!âseems like the final reason to hang up the scrubs. According to Robby, Dana is âthe ringleader of our circus,â which is an apt description for her resume, but doesnât quite capture the unequivocal value she brought to the emergency floor as a charge nurse. As the eyes and ears of the emergency wing, she has strong intuitionâto check on a pregnant Dr. Collins, call out ambulance arrivals, stay out of drama, and huddle with Robby when something feels off. In other words, she is indispensableâa credit to Katherine LaNasaâs lived-in performance. Sheâs also justified in wanting a better life. That brief shot of her cleaning out her desk? That wasnât an accident. This isnât something a sabbatical can fix. Sadly, I think the answer to this question is âyes.â
Will Dr. Langdon return to finish his training? Will Robby let him?
