Major League Soccer launched a new NFT collectibles platform called MLS Quest on the Sui network Monday, in a team-up with crypto startup Sweet.
The free-to-play experience lets soccer fans search for Key Play of the Game Medallions at online and physical pick-up zones across North America, including at real-life MLS matches. Once claimed, the digital medallions will reveal highlights from past and present MLS matches.
Fans who collect all four medallions from a single match will complete a “quest” and unlock rewards such as team merchandise, autographed jerseys, tickets, and exclusive experiences.
“At MLS, we continuously strive to grow our fan base and elevate the fan experience,” said Chris Schlosser, Major League Soccer SVP of Emerging Ventures, in a statement. “With MLS Quest and our partnership with Sweet, we’re excited to offer a unique collectible challenge that embodies our commitment to cutting-edge digital innovation.”
MLS Quest has launched with a free redeemable collectible from the platform’s official website. Additional collectibles are offered through the marketplace, currently starting at a price of $4.
Many of the world’s biggest sports leagues have gotten in on NFT collectibles since Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot found mainstream success in early 2021 on the Flow blockchain. Dapper itself has launched subsequent platforms with the NFL and UFC, while MLB and the NHL are among other American leagues that have debuted digital collectible experiences.
