Munson is an internationally recognized fine arts organization in Utica, New York, housing one of the finest collections of American art in the United States. Founded in 1919, Munson serves diverse audiences through the renowned Munson Museum of Art; more than 600 live performances and events; community arts classes; and Pratt Munson College of Art and Design, the upstate extension campus of the prestigious Pratt Institute.

From the early 1900s to the present, women photographers have contributed to the development and evolution of photography in bold and dynamic ways. See extraordinary images by internationally renowned women photographers drawn from Bank of America’s extensive photography collection, presenting more than 80 works of photographic art. Diverse in style, tone, and subject, these legendary images range from spontaneous to composed and monumental to intimate in scale — all of them a powerful testament to the photographic artistry of women. This exhibition has been loaned through the Bank of America Art in Our Communities® program.
Canvas to Culture: Thomas Cole’s Voyage of Life Lives On
February 23–May 18, 2025
This groundbreaking exhibition, organized by Museum Director Emeritus Paul Schweizer, is the first to uncover the enduring legacy of Munson’s beloved quartet of paintings by Thomas Cole, called the Voyage of Life (1840–42). From the first printed and painted reproductions to the popularity of the imagery in early multimedia shows, the historic journey of these iconic images culminates in the use of the painted vision of the second panel in the series, entitled “Youth,” to the silver screen in the first full-length “talkie” moving picture, “The Jazz Singer” (1929).
Karen LaMonte: Celestial Bodies

In this extensive career retrospective, Munson explores the extraordinary world of Karen LaMonte, one of the most internationally celebrated sculptors of our time. From her earliest experiments in casting glass to her astonishing achievements in sculpting marble, Karen LaMonte delves into the mystical forms of Japanese art, classical antiquity, and contemporary climate effects. An expansive, breathtaking array of figures and forms, Karen LaMonte: Celestial Bodies not only reflects LaMonte’s life and career but her artistic soul as well.
Munson Museum of Art is located at 310 Genesee Street in Utica, New York. It is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5pm Sunday, and closed on Mondays.
